Catch the species – and make it back first!

Just like in our YouTube videos, the aim of the game is to catch different species of fish.

Your first mission is to catch five different species and then make your way to the finish. Want a longer and tougher game? Increase it to 7 or 10 species!

There are a total of 29 different fish species on the game board.

But you can’t just travel to the nearest fish and pick it up.

The fish must be caught using the correct method!

Float fishing, spin fishing and saltwater fishing using equipment such as mackerel rigs – different species require different equipment and different strategies.

You need equipment

To succeed, you’ll need equipment such as a fishing rod, worms and lures. There are also FishCoins, which you can use to buy things like fishing permits for private waters.

At the start of the game, you get to choose some of your resources. The rest you’ll have to acquire along the way.

And this is where the strategy begins.

Which fish are you willing to go for?

Some species are far away – but relatively easy to catch.

Others are much closer to the start and finish. Perfect!

Or is it?

The problem is that your opponents have noticed this too. Fishing pressure is higher and the competition is tougher.

Some species are also much rarer than others. Catching a bonito on the west coast is not the same as trying to catch a perch or pike.

You constantly have to decide:

Which route gives me the best chance of winning?

Then the chaos begins…

At first, everything feels pretty calm.

You collect equipment. Plan your route. Catch a few fish.

Then your friends realize you’re in the lead.

And suddenly, maybe they’re not really your friends anymore.

Someone sends inspector Nidlund after you!

Nidlund is an extremely zealous fishing inspector. You may have done everything right – it doesn’t matter. If he catches up with you, he can take your fish!

Lonely at the top?

You had five fish.

You were the best.

You were going to win.

Now you have problems.

At the same time, you notice that another player has also managed to build an impressive catch. Maybe it’s time to team up?

Together, you can influence Nidlund and help each other.

There’s just one small problem.

Sooner or later, you both have five fish.

And then there can only be one winner.

Suddenly, the alliance is over and the race to the finish line begins!

A fishing game even if you’ve never fished before

“But I don’t know anything about fishing!”

Perfect. You don’t need to.

The rulebook is easy to understand, and most people will recognize the basic game mechanics from other board games: dice, cards, resources and movement.

At the same time, there’s enough authentic fishing atmosphere for experienced anglers to feel right at home.

We recommend that everyone reads the rulebook before playing for the first time – both experienced board gamers and first-time players.

For the whole family

The Great Species Hunt is designed for 3–6 players and is suitable for both children and adults.

Children under the age of 7 can play together with a parent.

Younger players may not always notice all the possibilities in the psychological game between participants – but that doesn’t matter. We’ve designed the game so they can have just as much fun anyway.

That means the kids can hunt for fish species while the adults sit beside them forming secret alliances, sending Nidlund after each other and ruining friendships.

Just like a pleasant family game night should be.

We at Kanalgratis have put a lot of time into The Great Species Hunt.

Board games are something completely new to us – and that’s exactly why we wanted to do it properly.

We chose to manufacture the game to a high standard and spent a lot of time finding the right manufacturing partner. We also personally visited the factory during production to inspect the manufacturing process and ensure proper working conditions.

The result is a large, carefully designed board game packed with fishing, strategy, humor and drama.
